After several hours of waiting for a meeting scheduled at 10am between the inspector-general of police, Hafiz Ringim with senior officers of the force yesterday, the IGP and his crew stormed the conference room, venue of the meeting and announced the death of Mr. Ganiyu Dawodu, a deputy inspector-general of police in charge of Force Investigation Department.
The IGP said the meeting could not hold due to the fact that it was a mourning period for members of the force.
Narrating the circumstance of his death, he said Mr. Dawodu died on Thursday while representing the IGP on an official assignment in Lagos. While in Lagos, he was in the company of some friends when they visited another friend in his hotel room. At the hotel room, the deceased was said to have slumped, and before any medical attention could come, he had passed on.
Ringim revealed that before his death, Mr. Dawodu was suffering from a heart disease which he had been managing through constant medical check-ups. He added that it is a wake-up call to all members of the force to go back and ensure that they do a proper medical examination and take their health seriously.
He also said that despite the fact that the deceased was a Muslim, there is the need to conduct a post-mortem examination for the purpose of documenting the actual reason behind his death.
He further charged all commissioners to ensure that maximum security is maintained in their various designations. “Ensure that appropriate deployment is carried out, let officers maintain their posts and they should discharge their obligation to the best of their ability. We must rise to the present security challenges in our country, especially at this festive period.
“With the problems in this nation, ranging from the bunkering of petroleum products in the South-South, acts of terrorism, banks are broken into, amidst various other challenges, at this point civilians have a lot to do in order to ensure that unity is achieved. This will fight against the natural enemy,” he added.
