Bamidele Salutes NMA for Free Medical Services

The chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Budget and Research, Hon Opeyemi Bamidele, has showered encomiums on the members of the Nigeria Medical Association for offering free medical services to wounded protesters during last week’s nationwide protest against the removal of oil subsidy. Bamidele, who represents Ado/Irepodun/Ifelodun Federal Constituency of Ekiti State at the National Assembly, specifically commended the state chapter of the medical union for standing on the side of the people.

In a statement signed by his special assistant on media, Mr Ahmed Salami and made available to newsmen in Ado Ekiti Saturday, the lawmaker said that the number of people that have died so far during the protests would have tripled the 18 persons estimated, but for free medical services put in place by NMA as an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The former Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy described the singular act as rare display of patriotism by men of the medical professional, saying gone were the days when some of their members used to chicken out and refrain from joining the people’s mass action due to governments’ threat.

The House of Represen-tatives ‘member reminded them (NMA members) that it is not yet uhuru in the fight against the controversy surrounding the oil subsidy removal, and charged NMA members across the 36 states of the federation to be resolute and fight with the organised labour until the federal government reverts to the status quo of N65 for litre of petrol.
