Armed robbers, operating on motorcycles yesterday in the commercial city of Onitsha, laid siege around banks and major business centres, dispossessing residents of their money and other valuables, while five suspected armed robbers were arrested along Atani R oad also in Onitsha.In one of the incidents which took place along the Old Market Road, the heavily armed robbers, who rode on two brand new motorcycles, trailed a young man who had withdrawn a huge sum of money in one of the new generation banks and disposed him of the money.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, said immediately the robbers took the money which was loaded in a big sack, they went on a shooting spree, apparently to scare away onlookers and sped away.
In yet another incident around the famous Ochanja Roundabout, the armed robbers numbering about seven operated on four brand new motorcycles.
According to sources, the robbers waylaid a businessman who was going to deposit a large sum of money in the bank and dispossessed him of the money before disappearing without any challenge or resistance.
The coordinated robbery attacks forced some banks and business centres within the affected places to quickly close down for the day.
However, along the Old Nkpor Road, the robbers were not lucky as their attempt to rob a business centre was foiled by the police who engaged them in a prolonged gun duel.
