Abia To Employ 50,000 Youths

No fewer than 50, 000 youths are to be employed across the 17 local government areas of Abia, according to an official. The permanent secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Emmanuel Ihedioha, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia yesterday.

He said that the gesture was part of the empowerment scheme of the current administration geared towards fighting poverty and reducing restiveness in the state.

He said that the governor had approved the registration of the unemployed, which, he noted, was to be carried out by the State Ministry of Commerce in collaboration with its Local Government Affairs counterpart.

“Those to be registered will be grouped under the umbrella of National Association of Small Scale Industries (NASSI).”
Ihedioha noted that the move would also establish small scale industries in all the local council areas, and added that each of the councils would attract more than 100 enterprises. He said that the state government had concluded arrangements to send a team of professional business promoters to identify and empower businessmen and women in the private sector.

Ihedioha said that the governor was determined to execute his programmes “and that is why he has directed that each local government area executes a project that will be inaugurated during the first hundred days of his second term.”

The permanent secretary said that the state would work closely with all progressives to ensure the state benefitted from all World Bank-assisted programmes.

Ihedioha urged residents of the state to form cooperative societies in order to benefit from the packages when they finally arrived. (NAN)
