A rights activist and President of the Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria, CRCN, Shehu Sani has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of seeking popularity with the late Chief Moshood Abiola by renaming the University of Lagos, UNILAG, after him.Sani said in a statement in Kaduna, yesterday, that Jonathan should proclaim Abiola president and name the newly-established university at his home town in Otuoke, Bayelsa State, if he was serious about honouring Chief Abiola, and not to appease the Southwest, which had been opposing his alleged “mis governance and corruption in the polity.”
He said: ‘’The recent decision by the Federal Government to rename the university of Lagos after chief MKO Abiola is not an honour but a popularity craving exercise by the Jonathan led administration.
’’It is also a deceptive effort to appease the South West’s growing opposition to the mis-governance and corruption in the polity.
’’If President Jonathan is a fan of Chief MKO Abiola he could have renamed the newly-built federal university in Otuoke,in Bayelsa State since the late chief also won in those areas in 1993 presidential elections.
’’No amount of renaming of monument will dampen the popular call on the Federal Government to recognize the late Abiola as a former president.
’’The 13 year resistance by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led governments to rename the National Stadium and the National Assembly after the late hero of democracy cannot be forgiven by the renaming of the University of Lagos.’’
