THE National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has given a 14-day ultimatum to go on an indefinite strike if the Federal Government does not prevail on the Lagos State government to recall the sacked Lagos State doctors and implement earlier agreements reached with the doctors.This is just as the doctors will begin a three-day warning strike today.
Speaking in Ibadan, on Wednesday, at a media briefing on the resolution of the body was the president, Association of Resident Doctors, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Dr Babawale Ojediran.
Dr Ojediran, who said that the agreement was reached at the just concluded ordinary general meeting of NARD on Monday in Port Harcourt, declared that a three-day national warning strike would start today.
While attributing the crisis to the government’s refusal to keep the initial agreement it reached with the Lagos Medical Guild, Dr Ojediran stated that “the action of the government has shown that it is insensitive to the plight of the people of the state and also shows its disrespect for professionals, especially the doctors in its employ.”
He decried the undemocratic and unconstitutional actions of the Babatunde Fashola-led government and sympathised with the people of Lagos State, who are bearing the brunt of the irrational and dictatorial acts of the Lagos State government.
Dr Ojediran, who expressed and re-affirmed the solidarity of Association of Resident Doctors, UCH, Ibadan chapter to the embattled Lagos Medical Guild in achieving justice and restoration of dignity in the medical profession, therefore, appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on the Lagos State government to prevent a total collapse in the health care in the country.
