Aregbesola supports diversification of Nigeria’s economy

The Governor of Osun State, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, has thrown his weight behind the Minister of the Economy and Finance Minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, over her call for diversification of the nation’s economy, warning that, the country may be heading for economic disaster, if both the Federal Government and the citizenry continue to operate a monolithic economy based on crude oil exportation alone.
He also warned against the continued neglect of commerce, trade, cooperatives, mines and agriculture, capable of resulting in national calamity, as the nation’s drive for development could be unrealisable.

The governor, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Commerce, Cooperatives and Empowerment, Dr Daudu Olalekan Yunusa, stated these at the Osun Special Day, at the ongoing 10th Niger National Trade Fair in Minna, last Friday.

According to him, “commerce is everything. We need to take commerce, cooperatives and investment very important in this country. It is a national calamity for us not to give attention to trade, cooperatives, investment, mines and agriculture. We will be heading for disaster, if we do not change our course.”

Aregbesola further expressed regrets over a lot of revenue being lost in Nigeria through underdevelopment of the tourism sector, highlighting that the nation had a lot of tourist centres across the country, stressing that, if adequate attention was given to the sector, the nation’s economy would grossly turn round for good.
