Three Injured In Task Force-STF Clash In Jos

The task force in charge of the enforcement of ban on commercial motorcycles in Plateau State, on Friday, clashed with men of the Special Task Force in charge of security in the state, leaving three people with injuries.Saturday Tribune learnt that the task force, comprising policemen, men of the Federal Road Safety Corps and other security agencies in the state, were on routine patrol when they accosted a soldier in mufti on motorcycle at Hill Station roundabout.

It was learnt that while they were struggling to impound the motorcycle from him, some of the STF men within the vicinity mobilised to prevent him from being arrested and his motorcycle impounded, the struggle led to a face-off between the two security agencies.

In the melee that ensued, the policemen released canisters of tear gas with the aim of dislodging the STF men to aid their escape with the motorcycle, but the soldiers stood their ground, while some men of STF, who got wind of the incident from their operational base, trooped to the scene.

There was exchange of gunshots as both sides refused to give up, forcing business premises within the area to close shops while motorists plying the major road turned back for fear of being hit by stray bullets.

A witness told Saturday Tribune that three people sustained injuries in the fracas while some of the motorists had their vehicles damaged in an attempt to flee the danger zone.

Efforts to get the Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Abu Emmanuel, to confirm the fracas proved abortive, as his phone was switched off.
