Okene: Fear of Military Reprisal Sends People Fleeing

The fear of reprisal actions by the military has sent many people fleeing from their villages in Abobo village, the scene of last Saturday deadly attack on the Mali bound military convoy, which killed two soldiers and injured eight others. The convoy was believed to have come under a coordinated attack by the unknown gunmen using high capacity remote controlled, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and hand held weapons at Abobo village, just outside Okene, in Kogi state.

A spot check by THISDAY, at the scene of the incident, showed very sparse number of people. A villager, who declined to give his name, said most people deserted the village Saturday for fear that the military might come back.
