Nasarawa State Government on Thursday it had paid N25 billion out of the N35 billion debt it inherited from the previous administration in the state. Gov. Umaru Al-makura said this in Lafia while receiving the report of the state Committee on Contract Verification. ``Despite the meager resources which accrued to the state, it was able to pay N25 billion from the over N35 billion it inherited from the past administration.
``We still have over N8 billion to settle”, he said, adding that the government would do everything possible to service the loan within the shortest posssible time.
According to him, this will enable the administration tackle other developmental issues.
``Even though the state government is tasked with the execution of projects, my priority is not just on grounded projects, but provision of basic infrastructure that has direct bearing to the common man in the state.''
Al-Makura appealed to the people of the state to support the government in making life better for all.
On the report by the committee, the governor expressed shock at discrepancies discovered in the award of contracts in the state.
He noted that some of the contracts were either inflated or reviewed two to three days before the exit of the previous administration.
The governor assured that the report would be examined critically and implemented as appropriate.
Earlier, the chairman of the committee, Mr Suleiman Danladi-Keffi, had explained that the report contained findings and recommendations that would help the state achieve its goals.
He said that the committee found out that some of the contracts awarded by the previous administration were either over priced or fake. (NAN)
