Following the recent resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, the Archbishop Metropolitan and Primate of the Anglican Church (Nigeria), Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh, has thrown his weight behind the emergence of an African as the new Catholic Pontiff. Okoh said the likely emergence of an African as the Pope would be a sign of answered prayers.
He spoke with journalists on Saturday in Abeokuta, after delivering a lecture entitled, “Martin Luther and The Reformation: The Message For Our Christian Generation,” as part of the activities for the convocation of the Crowder Graduate Theological Seminary.
Okoh however cautioned that having an African Catholic pontiff would not change the teachings of the religion.
“We all hope for the emergence of an African Pope. If we can have one, why not, it is a prayer.
“Having an African Pope is not going to change the teaching of the religion, it is just a psychological and emotional thing,” he said.
Okoh however decried what he described as a decayed Nigerian society, stressing that the emphasis placed on material things had destroyed the society.
The Anglican Priest warned that Christians would not attain the desired spiritual height if they made the love of money their priority.
“Today, archbishops, bishops and clergies both from the older denominations and the new ones, and even the one- church denomination pastors have made money and materials the canon of judging a successful ministry,” he said.
