The Presiding Officer, Mr Hassan Ishaq, however, gave the accused an option of N18,000 fine for the offences of criminal trespass, house breaking and theft. The Prosecutor, Mr Phillip Akogwu, had told the court that the accused stole the items from the shop of one Eniola Doherty.
Akogwu said that the accused was reported to the Asokoro police station on March 26 by Doherty, a resident of Maitama in Abuja.
He said the accused was apprehended after he broke into her shop and stole six bottles of different brands of wine and 10 packets of assorted biscuits, all valued at N27,550.
He added that the offences were contrary to sections 248,355 and 288 of the Penal Code.
The accused pleaded guilty to the charges and begged the court for leniency.
“Please have mercy on me sir, it is the work of the Devil,” he said.
