To an even greater surprise of the audience he put the rib around his neck. The event called "One-Meter Democracy" after the length of the cut - was designed to highlight the "tension between the individual and the state" in China.

Speaking on the unusual way of expressing his social position the artist stressed that performance can be considered extraordinary only when it differs from everyday life when it is given a certain intensity. He hopes that his work will stir up people. He also noted that historically in China the physical body was never treated as something special while the spirit was valued at times more.

He said: "Contemporary China is much more individual in its thinking, so it’s a pull between the two. By putting pressure on an idea about myself, my intellect, and my own body, I can make it into something much larger."
