THE caretaker committee chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Oyo State, Bayo Akande and four other officials have been arrested for their alleged roles in the ongoing face-off between the workers and the state government, over the non-implementation of the N18,000 minimum wage.Nigerian Tribune learnt on Wednesday, in Ibadan, that the NLC officials were picked up in the early hours of the day, at the NLC secretariat, Agodi.
Workers in the state had commenced strike on Monday, following the release of a salary table by the state government which they had since rejected.
The state Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Tambari Yabo, who confirmed the arrest of the unionist during a press conference in Ibadan, said they were picked up in the early hours of Wednesday.
The police boss said the NLC boss assaulted some school principals, saying that his action was capable of causing disturbance.
Also, no fewer than seven of the striking workers were beaten up on Wednesday by suspected political thugs.
When the Nigerian Tribune visited the NLC secretariat, Agodi, the workers, including teachers, were seen with bruises and wounds, while others were receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in the state capital.
Meanwhile, the caretaker labour committee spearheading the ongoing industrial dispute between workers and the state government has appointed a backup chairperson to continue the struggle for the payment of the N18,000 minimum wage.
The committee, in a release signed by the back-up chairperson, Seun Oludare, condemned the arrest of Akande by the state police command on Wednesday morning, adding that his role was the resolution of the entire workforce in the state.
Oludare, therefore, called on the police not to take side, but effect the immediate arrest and prosecution of some political thugs for attacking unarmed, civilised workers for expressing their grievance.
