The Katsina State government has kicked off the disbursement of federal government’s flood relief funds to the 10, 536 victims affected by last year’s flood in the state. It also promised other measures to mitigate the effects of the disaster. Speaking in Funtua during the release of the funds to victims in the area, special adviser to the governor on community development, Abubakar Bindawa, pledged that government would introduce measures to prevent future occurrences.Bindawa, who hinted that the federal government donated N300 million to flood victims in the state, said the sum of N130 million would be disbursed to the victims as compensation, adding that the remaining N170 million would be used on projects that would forestall future flooding.
He said a special committee to assess the extent of damages and losses incurred by the affected victims had been set up, adding that victims would get 20 per cent of “estimated items lost or destroyed” by the flood, while efforts would be made to avert similar occurrences.
