Reps Charge FG On FCT Police Barracks

The House of Representatives, yesterday urged the federal government to make special budgetary provisions through a supplementary budget for the Nigeria Police Force and commence the construction and expansion of the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) police barracks to take care of the accommodation needs of all the police rank and file in the FCT.
The motion to bring respite to the FCT police was moved by Hon. Ini Udoka, under matters of urgent national importance. In his presentation, the lawmaker noted that most police infrastructure within the FCT were constructed prior to the relocation of the nation’s capital from Lagos and had grossly dilapidated.

Udoka drew the attention of the House to the poor state of the FCT police accommodation structures saying that, “officers and men of the Abuja Police Command are much more poorly accommodated than their counterparts in other commands because the Nigeria Police has not made adequate provisions to tackle the accommodation needs of its men in the face of high cost of accommodation in the FCT.”
“Furthermore, low rank policemen within the FCT resort to living in disused and abandoned construction sites and the FCT wing of the Garki Police Barracks which has 14 blocks of 14 rooms meant to accommodate 196 policemen and their household now has over 2000 policemen.”

The House committee on Police affairs was mandated to take necessary steps to ensure proper intervention.
