I’m Not Under Arrest – Kugama

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, Alhaji Umar Mijinyawa Kugama, has said the rumour of his alleged arrest was the handiwork of troublemakers who do not want the prevailing peace in the state to endure. In a telephone chat with LEADERSHIP WEEKEND, Kugama said he was never arrested by the police in connection with a recent attack on Bello Tukur at the Bauchi zonal reconciliatory meeting convened by the PDP national chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.

Kugama, who was outside the state at the time of filing this report, said he would soon arrive in Yola to dispel the rumour, as according to him, “Seeing is believing. “How could I be possibly speaking to you over the phone if I were arrested?”

He said the story of his arrest was a false alarm by his traducers, even as he admitted that he was in Abuja to see to the release of his three supporters who were accused by Bello Tukur as being behind his travails.

“Following an attack on Bello Tukur, he lodged a complaint which led to the arrest of three of my supporters, which necessitated my travelling to Abuja,” he said.

Kugama’s alleged arrest came barely few weeks to the Nassarawo/Binyeri Assembly by-election which had set the tone for renewed hostilities between the two opposing PDP camps.

Secretary of the PDP faction loyal to the party’s national chairman, Mr A.T. Shehu, had earlier revealed via an Hausa political programme, “Kowa ya iya allonsa,” allegedly aired by Fombina FM, that Kugama was arrested by the police for the role he played in Senator Tukur’s attack at Bauchi.
