Gunmen kill Plateau PDP chief, wife, child

SUSPECTED Fulani herdsmen at Gwarim in Rim Village yesterday killed the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Sharubutu Ward in Bachit District of Riyom Local Council of Plateau State, Mr. John Baren, his wife and their child.
Residents alleged that Baren was returning from a burial of a relation in Riyom town when the assailants ambushed him along the two family members and shot them dead. The gory incident took place at about 3.30 p.m. when the PDP chief was riding his motorcycle.

A lawmaker representing Riyom Constituency in the state House of Assembly, Daniel Dem, who confirmed the incident, described it as sad and called on the Special Task Force (STF) to step up security and bring the culprits to book.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) has condemned the murder of the chairman of the Rivers State chapter of the party, Elder Julius Nwanfu.

Nwanfu was murdered by unknown persons on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, the state capital. The party urged the police authorities to bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to book.

The ANPP’s National Publicity Secretary, Emma Eneukwu, in a statement yesterday enjoined members of the party in Rivers State to exercise restraint on the issue.

He said: “We view this most unfortunate development as a dastardly act, which must be redressed. Accordingly, we call on the Nigeria Police and other relevant security agencies to begin immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding this gruesome murder.

“This is with the aim of identifying the perpetrators of the crime in order to ensure that they are brought to justice. As a political party, we urge our members in Rivers State and indeed other parts of the country to remain calm. We expect that nothing less than justice shall be done in this matter,” he said.
