19 govs shun Jang NGF faction’s meeting

Nineteen out of the nation’s 36 governors were absent when Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang-led faction of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum opened its secretariat in Abuja on Thursday. The secretariat is located at Nana Close, Maitama. Signs that things were not going to work well started manifesting when words went round that Vice President Namadi Sambo, who was supposed to be the guest of honour at the event, would not come and did not send any representatives.

JTF uncovers Lebanese terror cell in Kano

The Joint Task Force on Thursday said it had uncovered a Lebanon-based Hezbollah armoury and terror cell in Bompai, Kano State. The force, which said it found large cache of arms and ammunition, also confirmed the arrest of three persons in connection with the armoury and the cell.

Ekiti State Police Command has beefed up security across the state as the people wait anxiously for the Supreme Court judgment on Friday (today) in the appeal instituted by ousted Governor Segun Oni of the Peoples Democratic Party against Governor Kayode Fayemi.

Police arrest 10th suspect in brutal killing of soldier in London street

British police arrested a 10th suspect Monday in connection with the vicious street killing of a soldier in London, an apparent Islamic extremist attack that has horrified the country and heightened racial tensions. The 50-year-old man was detained in Welling, east of London, on suspicion of conspiring to murder 25-year-old soldier Lee Rigby, Scotland Yard said. Police gave no further information about the suspect’s identity.

CLANDESTINE moves to impeach Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, heightened on Wednesday as eight members of the House of Assembly were said to have shifted loyalty to the camp of the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike. Though the names of the lawmakers were not mentioned, the number of anti-Amaechi state legislators has suddenly swollen to 13 out of 32.

TWO young men have been remanded in Agodi Prison by an Ibadan Magistrate Court for allegedly using a magical ring to abduct and gang-rape a 19-year-old secondary school girl in Ibadan. The two suspects, according to a police source, were charged with conspiracy, rape and stealing of a Blackberry phone belonging to the victim.

Arik Air makes air return over bad weather

AN Arik Flight W 3788 conveying over 100 passengers from Lagos to Asaba Tuesday made an air return leading to panic by passengers.

The flight which was supposed to take off at 8:30 am was delayed in Lagos on account of bad weather. Though travellers had boarded the flight, but after about 2 hours inside the plane, they were asked to go back to the departure lounge as the plane could not take off on account of what the pilot called “terribly bad weather at Asaba.” After about 3 hours, the flight was boarded again because weather reports showed improvement within the internationally accepted landing standards. By the time it was boarded again, many people who sensed the situation as warning from Providence had already cancelled their trips.

Pirates kidnap oil tanker crew off Nigeria -security sources

May 28 (Reuters) - Armed pirates attacked an oil products tanker off the coast of Nigeria in West Africa and abducted an unknown number of crew, security sources said on Tuesday. Increasing piracy in the Gulf of Guinea region, which includes Africa's No. 1 oil producer Nigeria and is a significant source of cocoa and metals for world markets, is jacking up costs for shipping firms operating there.

The Joint Military Task Forces have arrested a total of 25 insurgents during an operation to foil a planned attack on Maiduguri metropolis. Director of Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Chris Olukolade, who said this in a statement on Monday, added that the security forces also killed three of the terror suspects. According to him, those killed included a high profile terror suspect, identified as Abba, who had been on the list of JTF’s most wanted persons.

In their reaction to the suspension on Monday, northern governors on the platform of the PDP were said to be considering leaving the party because of what they considered as “the narrowing of democratic options.”
Some of them, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, on Monday said that the alleged intolerance in the PDP was disheartening.
