Forty-eight hours after the Oyo State government unbanned the state chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), some members of the union, in Ibadan, on Thursday, engaged one another in a violent clash that saw 10 people seriously wounded.Nigerian Tribune learnt that the injured had been taken to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan for medical attention.
It was gathered that two of the vehicles that were vandalised during the clash were said to have been taken to the state police command in Eleyele.
The clash was said to have started shortly after a peace meeting held at the state headquarters of the union at Olomi area.
The meeting, which had in attendance representatives from all branches, was summoned by the newly inaugurated caretaker committee for the union led by Alhaji Taofeek Oyerinde with a view to impressing it on members, the need to rebrand the union by removing its negative tag by members of the public.
The clash, it was gathered, erupted when some members who are loyal to the new leadership of the union and who had expected that union members operating in different branches would be asked to vacate the areas felt disappointed as the issue was not raised in the meeting.
Unable to stomach the decision to allow status quo remain in the various parks, the aggrieved members were said to have swooped on those favoured by the decision and thus resulting in the violent clash.
But when contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olabisi Okuwobi, said there was no such crisis.
She said people were just trying to create unnecessary tension and confusion, to disrupt the peace being enjoyed in the state.
She noted that it was a mere rumour as there was no clash at the union secretariat.
According to her, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area was at the union secretariat monitoring event.
