A Mobile Court in Sagamu, Ogun, on Friday convicted 32 out of 38 motorists arrested by the Federal Road Safety Commission for various traffic offences. The motorists were arrested by the commission on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The FRSC’s prosecutor, Mr Uzoma Enwerenzo, told the court that the offenders violated various traffic rules and regulations on the highway such as, over speeding and driving without spare tyre.
Other offences, according to Enwerenzo, are reckless driven, insensitivity to other road users and the lack of caution and light signs, among others.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 32 out of the 38 persons, who pleaded guilty to the offences, appealed to the court to temper justice with mercy.
Delivering judgment, Chief Magistrate Sunday Banwo, sentenced 32 out of the 38 accused persons to between three weeks and two months imprisonment.
Banwo, however, granted them an option to pay fines between N2,000 and N50, 000.
He held that the court considered the fine option because the accused persons pleaded guilty to the charge.
The magistrate, thereafter, discharged and acquitted six other accused persons for want of evidence.
