Contrary to widely held belief that heat is hazardous to health, an expert has debunked the notion, saying instead that heat is very good for the body as many people are generally in the dark about it. Speaking to LEADERSHIP, Dr Michael Olusegun Abisola- Fernadez said that why people are getting negative effects from this heat period is that they are taking precautions contrary to the weather.
He affirmed that the body needs more water during the heat season, but not cold water.
He stated, “Once you take cold water on a hot level, you’re destroying the body. Heat is good once you know what to do with it. But if you’re going to work contrary to the heat with you having opposite the heat, then you’re destroying the body. As a matter of fact, the body needs warm water to thrive”
He explained that heat dehydrates the body when its fed cold water, adding, “the thing is, the more you take cold water during the dry or hot season, the more you get dehydrated. But if you take warm water, you balance up. My advice to Nigerians is that they should be able to control the body; their body should not control them.” The body needs more water during the heat season but not cold water.
Furthermore, Abisola-Fernadez noted that the heat weather in the northern part of the country is not as much as the south east or south west.
“The weather in other parts of the country is somewhat limited compared to the north. That is why in the north, during this period, you have what is called seizure; people dying of CSM, High BP, stroke etc because they do take something contrary to it and before you know it, they have a clot. This is the period you have what is called heavy clot.
You have to be in control of the body because the body will ask for it because you are dehydrated, take something that is almost level to the weather. Why are you having that clot, you may ask? It is because you take more of the cold water. You want to feel the way you feel and the more of the cold water you take, yet, it is the flesh that is being dehydrated not the inside.”
