Following incessant power failure from the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in Minna, Niger State Capital, the government has approved N98 million to purchase petroleum procucts to the State Water Board to improve power supply for its water treatment plants.
In the same vein, the government has also released N153 million for the purchase of various water treatment chemicals for all the water treatment plants in the state.
The move, according to the Commissioner for Water Resources, Hajiya Hadiza Abdullahi after the state Executive council meeting was to make sure that epileptic supply of electricity does not hamper the supply of potable water to the people in the state capital.
Hadiza said that the diesel to be purchased would power the water board’s generating sets at three water treatment plants in Minna as similar steps are taken last year for more effective water distribution mechanism in the state capital and Suleja.
The commissioner said that 40,000 litres of diesel are to be purchased for use at the Tagwai, Changaga and Bosso treatment plants to finally solve the problem of regular power outage and low voltage that have made the plants not to function to their full capacity.
According to her, on the average the state will be spending about N12 million on this commodity monthly but assured consumers that government will not renege on its responsibility to the people, saying government has approved the release of N153m for the purchase of water treatment chemicals for use in all the water works in the state this year bringing the amount to N251million.
